Huskies are double-coated dogs, requiring extra grooming attention during shedding season. To maintain their fabulous fur, it's essential to brush them daily and use specialized de-shedding shampoo and conditioner.
To groom a Husky during shedding seasons, daily use of a slicker brush and weekly application of de-shedding shampoo are recommended to keep their fur fluffy and healthy.
Huskies have a dense coat that sheds twice a year, but grooming them is straightforward if you know the secrets (hint: never shave a Husky's coat!). Tim Vogel, CEO of the dog grooming franchise Scenthound, shares his top three Husky grooming tips:
How to Groom a Husky
Tip 1: Never Shave a Husky's CoatHuskies have a double coat consisting of a top layer of longer, coarse hairs and a soft, down-like undercoat that provides insulation and protection. Shaving a Husky can make them more susceptible to heat and sunburn, as well as damage the top coat and disrupt the natural hair growth cycle, potentially taking years to regrow correctly, according to Tim.
Since Huskies naturally shed, there's no need for frequent trips to the groomer. Focus on regular brushing and accelerating the shedding process using the right tools (listed below) to maintain your Husky's healthy hair and skin.
To keep your dog's nails healthy, refer to our guide on at-home nail trimming or visit a professional groomer every 4 to 6 weeks.
Tip 2: Establish a Husky Grooming Routine
Husky grooming should include monthly baths and weekly brushing at a minimum. This helps prevent matting of the undercoat, which can be not only unsightly but also uncomfortable for your Husky, according to Tim.
Maintaining a grooming schedule in a journal can help establish and sustain good grooming habits.
Tip 3: Groom More Frequently During Shedding Season
Lastly, Tim advises Husky owners to increase grooming efforts during shedding seasons, typically occurring twice a year in the Spring and Fall. During these periods, Huskies shed their undercoats, a process often referred to as "blowing their coats," which helps regulate their body temperature through different seasons. Tim recommends weekly baths and daily brushing during this time to remove loose fur and prevent matting.
